Let me just start by saying, I do not have a green thumb. I love herbs and herbal medicine. I could tell you how to use at least 100 herbs medicinally. I appreciate plants and love being in the presence of nature, but I do not have a green thumb.
You don’t need a green thumb to grow your own food.
All you need is good dirt, water, sunshine, and access to baby plants or “starts.”
Our food is our first and best medicine. The fresher the food, the better the medicine. Within hours of being plucked off the vine foods begin to lose their nutritional value. Not only is eating fresher food healthier, the process of growing your own food and tending it is very therapeutic.
- Get some 4×4’s cut into dimensions so that you can make a square or rectangular box. Usually the place that sells the wood will also cut it for you. Nail them together at the ends. Place the box(es) in a sunny spot in your yard. Several large pots will also work if you want the process to be even easier.
- Fill your box(es) or pots with dirt. Don’t skimp on the dirt. I recommend organic potting soil mixed with compost if you can get compost. You can make your own compost with yard and kitchen waste.
- Buy or borrow some baby plants. Nurseries will stock the plants that are in season. If your neighbors or friends garden, ask if they’ll donate starts for your garden. Starts are much easier than seeds. I tried planting from seeds once and my lack of green thumb became quite apparent. Nothing happened.
- Plant your baby plants within 1-2 days of getting them. Water them gently and often. If they look wilted, they probably need water.
- Watch them grow and feel proud. 🙂
- When ripe or ready – you can tell by looking/feeling/smelling – pick them and eat them.
- Enjoy!
